Botanical name of Swiss chard: Beta Vulgaris var. Cicla,

Family: Chinopodiaceae

Plant description: Swiss chard is grown for its edible leaves and its stalk. It has erect growing habit with basal rosette of leaves with long fleshy petioles which can be red, yellow, green in colour. Leaves are large, wrinkled with prominent leaf veins and pronounced midrib.

Soil and climatic requirement: Chards grow best in moist, well drained, fertile and organically rich soil, soil should be light to sandy. And pH between 6.0-7.0 Plants should be positioned in full sun or partial shade.

Chard can tolerate mild frost but prolonged frost leads to bolting in some varieties.

Sunlight requirement: Partial shade is good for cultivation of Swiss chard.

Depth of sowing: sow seeds 13 mm or 1.3 cm depth.

Plating type: sow the seeds directly on growing beds, during month of Oct –Nov.

Spacing: leave a Row spacing 30-40 Cm and between plant 2.5cm (1 inch)

Plant care: Keep developing plats free from competition by regular weeding, hoeing and watering to ensure speedier harvest.

Harvest: Chards harvest best with sharp knife, cut off all the leaves within 2 inches from ground but make sure the growing point is not damaged. After cutting, new leaves come quickly. Successive crop is ready every 10-12 weeks.

Companion plants: Beans, Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, Cauliflower, Chines cabbage, Kale, Kohlrabi, onions.
